Congratulations to the following colleagues who are among the twenty lecturers from universities and colleges of higher education across England who have this week been awarded National Teaching Fellowships worth 50,000.

Professor Martha Pennington is a Powdrill Professor of English Language Acquisition and works at the Language Research Centre at the University of Luton. Martha specialises in the learning and teaching of language, teacher education and teaching English as a second language and has been at the University for five years. Martha is proposing to develop a Thesis & Dissertation Website for postgraduate (Master's and Doctoral level) students and their supervisors. It will build on her current work which attempts to address the needs of PhD students and their supervisors for effective feedback on the student's writing, by combining qualitative and quantitative methods of analysing this specialised type of writing.

Jocelyn Wyburd is Executive Director of the Language Centre at the University of Manchester. Jocelyn specialises in the management of teaching and learning services concerned with languages for the whole University. Jocelyn has been at the University for three years, having worked previously at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside. Jocelyn's project will focus on the use of portfolios as a means of teaching, enhancing and assessing learning and will develop online resources and structures to enhance the effectiveness of portfolio use and to support independent learning.
