Several hadronic states discovered in recent years defy interpretation as conventional mesons or baryons. I discuss how the constituent quark model may (or may not) be extended to accommodate the new states, concentrating in particular on two recent discoveries: the X(5568) tetraquark from the D0 experiment, and the Pc(4380) and Pc(4450) pentaquarks discovered at LHCb.
