The QCD phase diagram at large baryon densities is largely unknown, including the location and nature of the transition between hadronic and quark matter. I will review some theoretical aspects of this transition, its relevance to the physics of neutron stars, and recent attempts to understand it with the help of holography. Slides can be found here.
