Professor Christian Knigge

Professor Christian Knigge graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physics with Computer Science from the University of Southampton and then obtained a DPhil in Astrophysics from the University of Oxford. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore and was then awarded a Hubble Fellowship, which we held at Columbia University in New York. He returned to the University of Southampton in 2000 and is now a Professor in the department.

Research interests

Christian has broad research interests that include accretion physics on all scales, binary evolution, compact objects (white dawrfs, neutron stars and black holes), globular clusters, radiative transfer and (astro)statistics.

Teaching

I currently teach the first-year core module PHYS1201 "Physics Skills: Programming and Data Analysis", as well as PHYS2011 "Design and Observation in Astronomy", which includes a 2-week field trip to Tenerife during which we spend 1 week at the Observario del Teide carrying out astronomical observations.
