Dr Vasileios Apostolopoulos
I am a researcher that works on development of lasers, 2D materials, Terahertz spectroscopy and photonics system for quantum physics applications.
I work in Physics and Astronomy in the University of Southampton from September 2007 where I lead the TeraHertz laboratories group and the Ultrafast lasers group. I am at the level of a tenured Associate professor and I am the head of the graduate school in Physics and Astronomy. I was at the steering committee of the TeraNet network which is a group of UK scientists that are given the task from EPSRC to strengthen TeraHertz research and form a roadmap of TeraHertz activities in the UK. I am part of the Quantum Hub on Sensors and now we are poised for the 2nd stage of the Quantum Hubs in the UK to start during 2020.
We have demonstrated a 60 fs semiconductor ultrafast laser {Nature Photonics 3, 729-731, 2009}; world’s first all semiconductor THz spectrometer {Opt Lett, 33, p. 2125, 2008}; the first THz surface emitting photonic crystal quantum cascade laser {Appl Phys Lett, 93, 171112, 2008}; a novel type of THz emitter {Appl Phys Lett, 103, 252101, 2013}; a tunable repetition rate semiconductor ultrafast laser {Appl. Phys. Lett. 113, 161106, 2018}. I was invited in 2018 SPIE Photonics West to present our work on VECSEL-based THz spectrometers. We work on 2D materials, specifically on non-volatile, re-writable optical control of graphene conductivity using photo-conductive insulators {ACS Nano. https://doi.org/10.1021/acsnano.8b02161}. Finally we work on components for THz wavefront and waveform control based on meta-materials and liquid crystals {Opt. Mater. Express 8, 420-430, 2018; J. of Infr, Mill, and Terahertz Waves, 39, 223–235, 2018}.
