About this course
This MPhys Physics with Industrial Placement course provides a unique opportunity to study physics with a 6-month, paid industry placement in your fourth year. You can immediately apply your knowledge to a commercial development project through an internship, while gaining experience that will make you stand out to employers.
This flagship master's course is offered to all students on our Master of Physics degree at the end of year 2.
We regularly place students with companies such as global radiation detection company Symetrica, fibre laser specialists NKT Photonics, and electronics and engineering consultancy Roke Manor Research Ltd.
Unlike the sandwich-year placements offered by many other universities, this industrial placement won’t add an extra year to your studies.
That means you’ll be able to enter the job market after 4 years with real-world professional skills and a commercial awareness that will impress employers.
Many of our students are employed by their placement company when they graduate.

Year 4 overview
In the fourth year you’ll have the opportunity to spend about 6 months on an original research and development project in an industrial laboratory.
Projects are intended to cover a broad area. They could range from practical work in photonics or materials to computational and theoretical work underpinning industrial problems related to physics or astronomy.
You will return to the university in the second semester and finish your studies.

You'll find a variety of careers using maths and physics as key skills. Your experimental, theoretical and analytical knowledge will also be a strong foundation for further study at PhD or for an industry research role.

We will assess your application on the strength of your:

If you’re successful, we’ll invite you to an optional applicant visit day. This will give the opportunity to learn more about the department and take an interview, which may lead to a lower offer. If you attend a visit day before Christmas, you can take the physics academic scholarship exam.
We'll aim to process your application within two to six weeks, but this will depend on when it is submitted. Applications submitted in January, particularly near to the UCAS equal consideration deadline, might take substantially longer to be processed due to the high volume received at that time.
