Stefani Petropoulou MPhys Physics with Astronomy, second year
Having studied hard for my A-Levels and achieved very good grades, I wanted to join a university that would further enhance my learning and development as well as one that would provide me with opportunities to fulfil my future astronomy research aspirations.
An exceptionally high academic standard degree, in an inspiring and friendly department, located in a fantastically serene and beautiful campus! What better place to be and enjoy studying!
I aimed for a Russell Group university that was also among the best ranking UK universities for physics. Since my visit at one of the University of Southampton Open Days, I knew Southampton would be my first choice. Southampton had it all! An exceptionally high academic standard degree, in an inspiring and friendly department, located in a fantastically serene and beautiful campus! What better place to be and enjoy studying!
Studying in the UK
As I was moving away from home for the first time, I was anxious about almost everything! From the weather forecast, to living in a city where I thought the Mediterranean cuisine would be hard to find! Knowing that I had consciously chosen to be in an academically demanding university, I began having second thoughts about whether I would be able to cope with studying and managing a work-life balance.
Once in Southampton, even from the first week, I discovered that things aren't so bad as I had thought! It was October and yet the weather was sunny and pleasant; other students were also looking to make friends; by joining societies I could make even more friends as well as maintain a work-life balance; and the on-campus fruit and vegetable market was very handy. Just outside the campus I could even find kebabs!
After a few weeks, my confidence began to build up even more as the lecturers were friendly and approachable and the administration team were extremely patient and helpful. It was getting to be great!
Passionate physics lecturers
The teachers are not only experts in their field, but are also extremely passionate about what they do; this reflects in the high quality of their teaching. For me, the teaching has been both an inspiration and an enriching experience. The lecturers are also approachable and willing to facilitate learning. In general, there is a welcoming teaching atmosphere which encourages learning. I am fascinated by the new research outcomes and advances in the field which are presented by our renowned lecturers.
Super laboratory facilities
The laboratory facilities are super and I feel privileged to be able to experiment with such expensive equipment and materials. The laboratory work is challenging and provides great opportunities for experiential learning.
I also find the Hartley Library to be my haven especially during exam periods when I need to study for long hours. Its efficient printing facilities make my student life much easier!
My best experiences at Southampton
Some of my best experiences have so far come from my involvement with some of the many societies that exist. I thoroughly enjoy all of them and through them I have made tremendous friendships with students from different cultures and countries.
Southampton has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge of physics and astronomy by studying an exceptionally well-designed course, led by lecturers who are experts in their fields. Simultaneously, the laboratory workshops have developed my skills so that I can apply learning to real-life situations. I now feel much more confident in deciding on what I would like to focus on in the future.
