The University of Southampton

You’ll be supported throughout your degree so that you’re prepared for your future career. You can take up opportunities such as placements, volunteering activities and career skills sessions.

Career support sessions
You can take advantage of a programme of career-focussed sessions in your second year, designed specifically for physics students and timetabled to fit with your studies. These include application and interview workshops, as well as talks from visiting professionals.

Summer placements
Work placements are an excellent opportunity to develop work-based skills, get a taste for what you might like to do when you graduate and build links with organisations. Through our partnership with the South East Physics Network (SEPnet), our dedicated physics careers advisor will work with you to find the right placement opportunity.

Developing key skills

Whilst studying for your physics degree you’ll develop key, transferable skills which are valued by employers such as computation and coding, statistical analysis, logic, communication and project management. A physics degree is challenging; employers know that physics graduates are hardworking, intellectually curious and not afraid of a challenge.

Volunteering

There are many opportunities to get involved with volunteering to develop your key skills and provide you with valuable experience. You could undertake a school- or college-based placement to gain teaching experience; get involved with outreach activities to bring physics and astronomy to a wider audience; or volunteer in the community.
