University of Southampton: Our remit at the University is to make the world a better place, and key to that is engaging with the community and society at large. We are keen to find ways for our academics to share their research with the wider community, and not just those who read academic journals. It is also great to engage in projects like this which are great fun and also educational.
Dr Denise Baden is an Associate Professor at Southampton Business School, University of Southampton. She has been on several research trips to Cuba as part of her interest in sustainable and ethical business (Cuba was claimed to be the only sustainable country by WWF). Denise has also written several research papers on Cuba and is researching Cuban views of Fidel Castro’s leadership style. Denise is concerned that due to the historical ideological conflict between Cuba and the US, very little accurate or objective information is available about this fascinating and unique island – an issue which she aims to address through this project.
Maria Haïk Escudero is a composer and lyricist based in London and is resident composer at Theatre6. She completed the MA at Goldsmith in Musical Theatre (composition) and is currently developing two musicals. She is happy to work with schools/colleges to help students with any aspects of the compositions, whether it’s lyric-writing or putting ideas into a score. Maria can do group work or one to one if just one or two students are interested in entering.
Maria’s base rate is £31 per hour, but she may charge for travel time plus expenses, so please get in touch with Maria direct on maria@ilovepiano.org to discuss.
The kinds of things Maria can help with are:
- telling the story/getting the message across in the song • lyric structure/rhyme • setting lyrics to melody • Cuban rhythm and music • individual character voice • scoring for piano and vocals • idea to song; chord sequence to score • providing feedback or critique.
Olly Lewis, University of Southampton, School of Music: Olly Lewis is a Composer, Singer/Songwriter and Teacher who has recently graduated from the University of Southampton. With a First Class Honours in BA Music and an MMus Composition degree, his songwriting has taken him to Glastonbury Festival, his Composition (original musical The Craft of the Cooper) has taken him to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and his teaching and work shopping experience has taken him to the Royal Albert Hall with the REMIX Creative Orchestra. He is based in Southampton and works for SOCO Music Project, a company of which makes a difference by providing positive, creative music opportunities for people of all ages. Olly is happy to work with schools/colleges on any aspect of songwriting, composing and music technology (being particularly familiar with Sibelius and Logic software). He is more than happy to run group sessions and/or one to one sessions. Olly’s base rate is £25 per hour but that depends on travel expenses. Dr Andrew Fisher is an Associate Professor at Southampton Music School, University of Southampton.
Andrew is a composer writing film music, musical theatre, concert music and pop and jazz. Andrew began working in film and musical theatre shortly after completing his PhD in Composition. Catherine Eliza Tarrant graduated from Royal Holloway College with a degree in Drama and Theatre studies and works as a singer songwriter and as Creative Director for SoFar and has a finger in many musical pies!
