Lucy Blue – a short biography

I am Lucy Blue, director of the Centre for Maritime Archaeology at the University of Southampton and one of the educators on the Shipwrecks and Submerged Worlds course. My experience in maritime archaeology extends from maritime ethnography, coastal landscapes, harbours and geomorphology, to underwater survey and excavation, coastal heritage management and preservation and media presentation. Julian Whitewright – a short biography

Hello, I am Julian Whitewright and I am one of the educators on the Shipwrecks and Submerged Worlds course. I work as a maritime archaeologist at the University of Southampton and the Maritime Archaeology Trust (www.maritimearchaeologytrust.org). The areas of maritime archaeology that I am interested in really revolve around boats and ships, and especially the different ways that they were built and used; both now and in the past. Amelia Astley – a short biography

Hi, I’m Amelia Astley, a PhD student at the University of Southampton. Although my office is within the National Oceanography Centre my PhD focuses on the dynamics of shipwreck sites, specifically looking at the effects of varying marine environments on the evolution of wreck sites. Presently I am focusing on the wreck of the SS Richard Montgomery, a WW2 liberty ship, which wrecked after becoming stranded on a sandbank off the Sheerness. Continue reading →

Danielle Newman – a short biography

Hello!  My name is Danielle Newman and I am currently working towards a PhD in Archaeology at the University of Southampton. My work focuses on how theories and models of public engagement are currently being applied to maritime archaeology. I look at how academics think maritime archaeologists are communicating with the public and then go and interview people who are working on engagement programmes to see how theory is being applied.
