Our remote sensing interests started with the EU Framework 4 research program FLIERS (Fuzzy Land Information from Environmental Remotely Sensed Images). This became an EU flagship project which concentrated on mapping, analysing and including the sources of uncertainty in remotely sensed data, from sensor through images to resulting data. It was a collaboration of Southampton, Leicester, Aristotle Univ (Greece), and JRS (Italy). It pioneered techniques still of continuing interest today. We next worked on analysing remotely sensed images by texture and defining how we could progress from low-resolution satellite data to give high-resolution analysis. This defined new ways to extrapolate from coarse RS images to underlying mapping data. We are currently moving towards the analysis of malaria via remotely-sensed imagery, and new techniques to sense change. There is an active collaboration between ECS, the School of Geography and the School of Oceanography which explores advantages of new techniques and data at the interface between these three disciplines. |
