Intelligent Systems and Machine Learning

In our ever-increasing information age, advanced intelligent systems are required to manage and understand enormous amounts of data, and to learn their salient characteristics. ISIS work in Intelligent Systems and Machine Learning is diverse, ranging from the development of new theories through to their application in fields such as signal processing, vision, materials science, medical, automotive, nautical and aerospace. The theoretical research includes:

  • Modelling Evolutionary Algorithms
  • Intelligent Data Modelling
  • Data Fusion
  • Support Vector Machines and Kernel-based Learning
  • Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery
  • Bioinformatics, chemoinformatics and proteomics

The research is conducted by Professor Chris Harris, Professor Steve Gunn, Professor Mahesan Niranjan, Dr Adam Prügel-Bennett and Dr Craig Saunders. Much of our research is in collaboration with other Southampton research groups such as our work on modelling brake squeal with the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, marine navigation with ship science, work on process knowledge discovery with the School of Engineering Sciences, and our work on environmental modelling with the Department of Geography. We also work extensively with overseas colleagues, for example we have important research links with the Universities of Adelaide, Australia; Darmstadt, Germany; Imperial College, UK; Florida, USA; Manchester, UK; Hong Kong, China; and NUS Singapore. Our principal industrial collaborators are Ricardo, BAE systems, IBM, Lucas Varity, Prosig, Racal, GKN, and Unilever, with further support from the EU, DERA, MOD and the EPSRC.
