Following the success of the First International Conference of English as a Lingua Franca in Helsinki earlier this year, we are pleased to announce the second conference in the series. As everyone who attended the Helsinki conference can confirm, English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) has become both a vibrant field of research, and one of the most frequently discussed and hotly debated topics of our time. The 2009 conference will provide a forum for researchers to present updates on their work in this fast-moving field; for further discussion of the implications of ELF research for language policy, teaching, testing, standards, and the like; and for the ideological debates to continue. Proposals should be sent by email to: aa3@soton.ac.uk. Closing date for submission of proposals: 31 October 2008. For more information, please see the conference website.
The Centre for Excellence in Multimedia Language Learning at the University of Ulster aims to develop appropriate teaching methods that fully engage students in their own learning through the integration of Information and Communication Technology into classroom teaching. The Centre would like to invite proposals for the development of projects that would facilitate language teaching and learning in a multimedia laboratory. Project proposals are welcome from individuals as well as teams. Successful applicants will receive an award of a maximum of £3000, depending on the scope of the project. This funding may used for development of course materials or software creation, for example.

The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS), in partnership with the Subject Centre for Philosophical and Religious Studies (PRS), has prepared a report for HEFCE on international approaches to Islamic Studies. The report examines the historical development and current state of Islamic Studies in eight countries: the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Australia, Malaysia and Turkey. It also presents perspectives on recent developments in Islamic Studies and the responses of governments, policy makers and funding bodies; interactions between institutions of higher education and faith-based organisations and communities; and case studies that highlight examples of innovative practice in relation to Islamic Studies in higher education. The report was commissioned by HEFCE to inform its activities relating to Islamic Studies, which was designated a Strategically Important Subject in June 2007.
