Preparing for success: supporting international students in the disciplines

This is a collaborative event between LLAS and the HEA/UKCISA initiative Teaching International Students. It is aimed at teaching staff across disciplines and will explore the role of lecturers in the preparation of international students for study in the UK.
Since the responsibility for preparing international students for success is shared by a variety of practitioners including those working on pre-sessional courses and lecturers working in disciplines, this workshop aims to present ideas and advice for strengthening shared understandings and practice to enhance support for international students.
It will consider the potential of the pre-sessional, focusing particularly on the ways in which disciplinary input to a pre-sessional programme can have a positive impact on teaching, learning and assessing international students as they prepare for - and progress through - their studies. It will include case study examples from disciplines such as Law and Business.
Learning outcomes
- An understanding of the key strengths (and weaknesses) of current models of the pre-sessional
- Insights into current research on pre-sessional courses
- An understanding of the rationale for disciplines to be closely involved in pre-sessional delivery
The 'Teaching International Students' project is a joint initiative of the Higher Education Academy and the United Kingdom Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) with funding from the Prime Minister's Initiative 2 (PMI2). It is a two year project, hosted and co-funded by the Higher Education Academy.
Fees
- There is a charge of £50 for employees and postgraduate students of publicly funded UK educational institutions to attend this event.
- There is a fee of £80 for employees and postgraduate students of private institutions/organisations and non-UK institutions to attend this event.
- Please note that we reserve the right to charge a £50 cancellation fee if you do not notify us by Tuesday 2nd November that you are unable to attend this event.
