This event is being organised in partnership with UCML, University Council of Modern Languages and Shaping the future of languages in higher education.

UK higher education is undergoing rapid change. The introduction of £9000 per year fees in England, competition from the private sector and the new Higher Education White Paper represent the biggest changes to higher education in a generation. The ‘new world’ of higher education presents many opportunities and challenges for leaders in languages, linguistics and area studies.

This interactive workshop is an opportunity for heads of department and other leaders to share practice, network, and to develop management and networking skills necessary for a department’s prosperity.

The changing strategic environment in UK higher education: challenges and opportunities
Jim Coleman (Open University and Chair of UCML) will present an overview of the likely and possible impacts of the Higher Education White Paper and the opportunities and challenges facing leaders in languages, linguistics and area studies.

Shaping the Future for languages
Pam Moores (Aston University) will present resources for leaders in languages, developed by the HEFCE-funded Shaping the Future of Languages project.

11.45 - 12.45 Responding to change: impact of the new fees regime.

Changes in the strategic environment of higher education will have differing impacts on each individual institution and department. Working in groups participants will examine and discuss scenarios surrounding the following topics.

1. Funding and fees for the year abroad
2. Outreach, widening participation and fair access
3. Marketing your course and your university

13.45 - 14.45 Building successful relationships with senior management.

Success in leading a department is highly dependent on developing fruitful relationships with Deans and other senior managers. Poor relationships with senior management can make an otherwise strong department vulnerable whereas good relationships provide the key to finding win-win situations even in the most difficult circumstances. In this session Michael Kelly will demonstrate how investing time and effort in building relationships can help you outline advancing your department’s interests.
14.45 - 16.00 Achieving win-win situations: group role-play.

If we can understand other people’s interests and situations we can achieve solutions where both parties win. In this session participants will take on the role of either senior managers or departmental colleagues facing a possible conflict. Groups will work to develop a strategy to achieve their stated goals, and then will meet a group with a different agenda with a view to finding a solution satisfactory to both parties.
