Languages have never been more needed in higher education, both as specialist study and as basic key skills. University programmes are undergoing rapid change to meet newly emerging needs and new student profiles. The academic community needs to reshape the ways in which languages are offered, finding bold and imaginative responses to address the new agendas.

This is the seventh biennial conference on languages in higher education, organised by the LLAS Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS), the University Council of Modern Languages (UCML) and the Association of University Language Centres (AULC). It aims to bring together teachers and researchers from across languages and related disciplines.

The theme of the conference aims to encourage the language community to take a bold and radical approach to the provision of languages in Higher Education. This might include:

• engaging with policy in both national and institutional contexts
• working together to present a clear and collective voice for languages
• thinking of new approaches to creating degree pathways and curricula
• supporting students with all levels of linguistic skill in adding value to their graduate profile

The conference is aimed at anyone concerned with learning and teaching in higher education and its relationships with secondary schools and further education. It will be of interest to people in the languages professions and to employers who wish to develop closer links with education in the field of languages and related studies. It is intended as a forum for networking, sharing ideas and resources, and exploring ways of meeting the challenges of sustaining high quality education in languages and related subjects.

REGISTRATION CLOSES ON TUESDAY 1 JULY 2014

Cancellation charges will apply :

• 50% refund of registration fee where cancellation is received in writing by Tuesday 10 June 2014
• No refund will be given if cancellation is given from Wednesday 11 June 2014 onwards

From Southampton Central train station:
WALKING: You can walk to the hotel and it takes approx 10 minutes. The most direct route is exiting at Platform 4, through the Toys R Us car park, past John Lewis/Marks and Spencer (along Harbour Parade), until you reach firstly the Quays swim and dive complex, and then the Grand Harbour Hotel next door.

BUS: exit from Platform 4 and get the city shuttle (http://www.redfunnel.co.uk/travel-connections/bus-connections/citylink/) . It is £1 a journey. You can take the bus from the station all the way to the Red Funnel Ferry, and then it is just about a 5 minute walk to the Grand Harbour Hotel.
