1. Call for papers: Teaching methodology, philosophy and social theory in Area Studies

Area Studies Project Event - Scottish CILT, University of Stirling - 04 February 2004
Papers are invited for the next Area Studies Project event 'Teaching methodology, philosophy and social theory in Area Studies' which will be held on 04 February 2004 at Scottish CILT, University of Stirling, Scotland. 2. Call for papers: Navigating the new landscape for languages

Two-day conference at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
We are now inviting proposals for papers or workshops to be presented at this two-day conference, jointly organised by the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies and CILT - The National Centre for Languages, in partnership with key subject organisations in languages and related studies in higher education: UCML, SCHML, AULC and ALL. 3. LLAS Notes

This is a reminder that free copies of the new LLAS notebook are now available. Simply complete the online order form. The notebook includes the updated "Why Study Languages?" CD, featuring new presentations on Linguistics and Area Studies, in addition to a directory of contact details for associations in each subject area, information on studying at university and statistical tables and graphs relating to the provision of courses in each area. If you have already received your copy of LLAS Notes, the Subject Centre is interested to hear your views so please fill in the feedback form.

4. Intercultural learning: IALIC Forum

16 December 2003, University of Lancaster
This forum will take place as part of the IALIC (International Association for Languages and Intercultural Learning) at the University of Lancaster. The forum will be structured in advance from the Descriptions of Practice which you are invited to submit. The forum is open to anyone (you do not have to be registered for the whole conference) but if you are not a delegate at the conference you will need to register with the Subject Centre by sending an email to llas@soton.ac.uk.

Deadline for description of Practice: Those wishing to contribute to this forum should submit a Description of Practice. The deadline for the submission of the Description of Practice is 20th October 2003.

5. The Subject Centre in Wales

The Subject Centre has established a partnership with CILT Cymru to help deliver activities to meet the specific needs of our colleagues in Wales. Keith Marshall, Director of CILT Cymru, would like to establish an Advisory Group to advise on the shape and focus of these activities. He is looking for representation from colleagues across the fields of Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies. If you would like to be part of this group (which would meet no more than twice a year) please contact Keith Marshall: k.marshall@bangor.ac.uk.

6. C&IT Workshop - using Powerpoint in language teaching

The Subject Centre and CILT are proposing to organise a one-day hands-on course focusing on the exploitation of PowerPoint in language teaching in Higher Education. We plan to run the course in May 2004. At this stage we would like to get a feel for the level of interest and demand for such a course and would be grateful if you would complete five short questions using our on-line form.

7. European day of languages: 26 September 2003

The European Day of Languages is celebrated every year on 26 September and is marked by events across Europe. An Italian coffee morning or a French masquerade ball, whatever your event let us know how you get on! Send an email to edl@cilt.org.uk and remember to register your events at http://www.ecml.at/ If you are organising an event on 26 September, the Subject Centre will shortly have a limited supply of:

  • A general leaflet about the European Day of Languages
  • Sheets of Multilingual stickers
  • Posters for you to advertise your own events

8. BLIS Courses

Register your language courses plus free advertising. BLIS Courses, part of a suite of courses at www.blis.org.uk/courses/ is supported by learndirect and actively promoted across the UK. Registration is simple, so make the most of this opportunity for free advertising and register your language courses today.

9. Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Project Management Conference Thursday 18 September and Friday 19 September 2003
This is an academic conference with a focus for those involved in the teaching, learning and assessment of project management. Papers covering a range of topics will be presented by leading academics. Additional speakers who also have a wealth of knowledge and experience of their subject matter will join them. Supporting the conference are the UK Association for Project Management (APM) and the Learning Teaching and Support Network (LTSN) for Business Management and Accountancy (BEST).
