Collaboration Programme in Modern Languages in Higher Education

In October 2001, the Subject Centre and the University Council of Modern Languages were awarded £482,950 from HEFCE's Restructuring and Collaboration Fund for a three-year programme. The programme consists of 10 pilot projects which will bring about a series of collaborative and cooperative developments in modern languages.

Area Studies Network

The Area Studies Network represents a collaborative approach to Area Studies whereby Subject Centres across the humanities, arts and social sciences work together to raise awareness of interdisciplinary issues and to provide support in the form of seminars, workshops, web pages, newsletters and networking for colleagues from both the disciplines and the areas concerned.

Promoting and evaluating the use of the European Language Portfolio (ELP) in Higher Education

The Nuffield Foundation and the University of Southampton are funding 10 partner institutions to run mini-projects whose aim is to implement and evaluate the European Language Portfolio in Higher Education. It is hoped that the use of the portfolio will strengthen an interest in languages in addition to promoting the development of good language learning strategies and key skills. It is expected that learners will also value the opportunity to look ahead to anticipate and prepare for the needs of the workplace in lifelong learning thought reflective practice (role of the ELP Biography) and documentation of achievement (the role of the ELP Dossier and ELP Passport).

Pedagogic Research Fund 2002/03 (Phase 1)

The Subject Centre has received additional funds from the Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) for 2002-2003. The CILT/Subject Centre Higher Education Information Officer manages the project at CILT. Projects were commissioned on one or more of the following key themes:

  • diversity of student population/learner characteristics;
  • pedagogy/methodology;
  • multi/interdisciplinarity;
  • recruitment and retention;
  • policy development;
  • staff development and teacher training.

Reports from the first round of pedagogic research projects were published in January 2004.

Extending good practice in less widely used less taught (LWULT) languages

This project will work with language practitioners to disseminate and transfer innovative practice in LWULT languages through workshops and number of funded mini development projects. Collaboration across languages and between institutions will be a key feature. Case studies from these and other projects will be made available through the Subject Centre's Guide to Good Practice whilst all materials developed will be available through the Subject Centre's web-based Materials Bank.

Thematic Network Project

The Thematic Network Project develops and promotes curriculum innovation in Europe. National reports have been produced by Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Synthesis and summary reports are also available.

Join the Club: Community Language Clubs

www.jointheclub.net
This is a Lingua Project that aims to establish a large network of community based language learning clubs, which, by non-traditional means, will promote the learning of an additional language to one's mother-tongue.
