Blackboard at the University of Hull

Academic Services Learning Development at Hull provides Blackboard as a service to academic staff to support teaching and learning. This service was formally launched in May 2000 and has grown considerably in that time from being used by a handful of willing and enthusiastic staff to a wide range of users.

There are currently around 18 departments using Blackboard at Hull, which involves over 200 lecturing staff. These lecturers have created over 220 courses between them, delivering teaching support material to about 4000 students. These figures are rising continually, with more departments planning to use Blackboard in the forthcoming 2001/02 session.

Blackboard is a commercial product produced by a company of the same name. There are 3 levels available. Level 1 is a course management tool that allows you to create courses, as demonstrated in this mornings session. Level 2 expands this with portal facilities that allow you to link to web-based resources, as well as campus on-line communities, web-based email and various other online facilities. Level 3 is a complete end-to-end e-Learning solution that encompasses level 1 and 2 and can tie in with University back-end databases, allowing single log in to what is effectively a staff student Intranet off the self.
