Last week, Dave Nicholson and Sam Miller attended BAE Systems Defence Information (DI) Technology Exhibition in London. The Exhibition was attended by DI technical authorities / capability managers and technical leads from the Advanced Technology Centre. It showcased a range of products and technologies being developed and delivered within the DI business. An ORCHID stand was included and (with help from Wenchao at Nottingham) we ran the AtomicOrchid demo throughout the day. The demo was well received and the connection to military scenarios and C2 & Information Systems was discussed. Trust in the planning agent was viewed as a particularly key issue and motivates the future inclusion of provenance information. It was commented that the burden on the human decision-maker at HQ may have been shifted to a new dimension (checking and confirming task allocations) rather than removed by the planning agent. Experiments would be welcome to confirm to what extent the agent improves operational tempo in various situations. Finally, a clear link was identified between AtomicOrchid and a mission planning system developed at BAE Systems ATC for allocating resources to tasks in the maritime and air domain. This will be further explored to identify opportunities for collaboration and exploitation.
