Shape the ECS of the Future

Electronics and Computer Science is now a large School of 250 staff and 2,400 students and as part of our 75th Anniversary there will be strategic investment including academic appointments, new laboratories and office space to facilitate our growth in new and existing areas of Computer Science research. The scale of investment is significant, and our ambition is to grow the number of academic staff in Computer Science by 50 percent.

A key feature of ECS is that we are truly interdisciplinary. Many of our research groups sit at the interface between electronics and computer science, including cyber security and cyber physical systems, and we hold significant research links with other schools, institutes and faculties. Through making key appointments in seven research areas, our ambition is not to rest on our history and past successes. We wish to grow a School for the future, developing new research activities and educational programmes that continue to make the highest quality contributions to science and engineering in an increasingly uncertain world facing significant global challenges.

Automation and Robotics

Our research into Automation and Robotics develops novel technologies for embodied, autonomous systems deployed in complex, dynamic and uncertain environments.

Computer Engineering

There is an increasing need for research at the intersection of computer science and electrical engineering.

Digital Health

The incremental digitisation of our physical world is creating news ways to connect, aggregate and disaggregate digital representations of human health.

Human-Centred AI

Human-Centred AI (HCAI) is a transformative research agenda focused on creating intelligent systems that are embedded in complex human social and organisational environments.

Human Systems Interaction

Human Systems Interaction (HSI) is an evolution of the study of Human Computer Interaction (HCI), which has primarily focused on the interface between “the computer” and a person.

Machine Learning

Machine learning is the science and art of extracting useful information from large and complex datasets.

Working with us

We have created an environment that has inspired an extraordinary level of achievement

Our mentoring

ECS has a thriving mentoring initiative that is enriching our culture by providing a supportive environment for personal development.

Southampton is renowned for offering a first-rate education in an exceptional research environment, but we do not merely rest on our history and past successes. This bold expansion of staff and facilities in Electronics and Computer Science will place Southampton at the cutting-edge of AI teaching and research long into the future, delivering our mission to change the world for the better.
