1. Teaching Translation
University of Wales, Swansea, 20 January 2006
This event which will seek to assess current approaches and likely future directions
in Translation and Interpreting Studies is only a few days away. There are
still a few places left so anyone who would like to attend but has not registered
yet is asked to go to the Subject Centre events

2. UCML Plenary
16 January 2006 at CILT
The next plenary of the University Council of Modern Languages will take
place on Monday 16 January at CILT. There has been some good news for languages
lately, and we would be pleased to see representatives of as many language
departments as possible at the Plenary to discuss new initiatives. For more

3. EUROCALL regional workshop - "Multimedia Language Learning - where are we now?
University of Portsmouth, 09 February 2006
EUROCALL and Portsmouth University are pleased to announce a regional one-day
workshop event which will take place at the School of Languages and Area
Studies, Park Building, King Henry I street, Portsmouth, PO1 2DZ (nearest
station Portsmouth & Southsea). The event is entitled "Multimedia Language
Learning: Where Are We Now?" with
speakers to include Professor John Gillespie, Dr Lesley Shield, Dr George Ypsilandis,
Dr Paul Bangs and Professor Graham Davies. The event will take place on Thursday

4. CALR Conference of the Language Learning and Teaching Special Interest Group (LLT SIG) of the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL)
19/20 April 2006
University of Southampton
On 19/20 April 2006 The Centre for Applied Language Research (CALR) will be
hosting a conference of the Language Learning and Teaching SIG of the British
Association for Applied Linguistics. The Conference topic is: "Language use,
language processing and language learning: interfaces in instructed second
language acquisition." For full particulars of the conference and the call

The Subject Centre into Modern Languages Research. This will start in January 2006 and will be led by Professor Michael Kelly, Director of the Subject Centre. A research assistant is to be appointed. The post is advertised on jobs.ac.uk (www.jobs.ac.uk/jobfiles/PY807.html)
Survey: Multimedia Language Learning Survey
7. Survey: Multimedia Language Learning Survey and the chance to win an I-Pod
We are conducting a survey on behalf of the University of Ulster, Centre of Excellence in Multimedia Language Learning. We are interested in the many ways that technology is employed in language teaching and learning, in particular, the use that is being made of dedicated digital facilities. The questionnaire (www.geodata.soton.ac.uk/llas/learning_survey/) should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. All entries received by the extended deadline of 13 January will be entered into a prize draw for an Apple i-Pod.

Research articles that address the issue of teaching and learning foreign/second languages by disabled learners, either in the form of a qualitative or quantitative enquiry are sought by Judit Kormos and Edit Hegybiro Kontra (Etvs Lorand University, Hungary). ENLU consultation
10. ENLU consultation
The ENLU project (European Network for the Promotion of Language Learning among all Undergraduates) has just launched a Europe-wide consultation on the need for a languages-for-all policy. Please read the ENLU consultation document and respond to the survey at the ENLU website (www.elccel.org/enlu-consultation/index.html). The outcomes of this consultation will be presented at a conference to be held in Nancy on 7-8 April 2006.
Student Award 2006 - Call for essays
11. Student Award 2006 - Call for essays
Closing date: 17 February 2006
A Reminder that only four weeks remain until the closing date for entries for
this award. The Subject Centre is giving language students the chance to
offer their opinions and experiences in a 1000-word essay entitled 'How does
your experience of your course compare with any expectations you may have
had?' This opportunity is open to anyone studying Languages, Linguistics
or Area Studies as part of their HE course. There is a 250 prize for the
winning entry, which will be featured on the Subject Centre website. For

The ESRC Society Today website (www.esrcsocietytoday.ac.uk) - launched in May 2005 by The Economic and Social Research Council - provides academics, students and researchers with a valuable, free digest of social sciences research available, planned and in progress.
German extension courses
14. German extension courses
The School of Languages and Area Studies at the University of Portsmouth has been selected by the Training and Development Agency to deliver this short intensive course designed to support graduates with a language other than German to achieve sufficient competence in German to enable them to teach accurately and confidently at secondary level to at least key stage 3 (ages 11-14). New publication: Deaf and Multilingual - A practical guide to teaching and supporting deaf learners in foreign language classes by Judith Mole, Hilary McColl and Mireille Vale. This book is about deaf people learning spoken/written foreign languages and is written primarily for those teaching and supporting deaf learners attending standard foreign language learning classes.
