Summary

The SOAS-UCL CETL for ‘Languages of the Wider World’ (LWW CETL) aims to promote excellence in the teaching and learning of languages that do not have a large presence in higher education in the United Kingdom but which are of increasing strategic importance locally and globally. A key objective of the CETL is to support blended language learning, the combination of face-to-face learning and self-study, using multimedia materials.
LWW CETL has launched the Flexi-Pack project to create a whole range of mobile learning (M-learning) materials with a fully-integrated approach between traditional lessons and self-study. This paper will present the pedagogical rationale behind the Flexi-Packs and will also recommend further developments in relation to them (e.g., collaborative learning) in order to maximise students’ motivations.

Description of materials

The SOAS-UCL CETL in ‘Languages of the Wider World’ (LWW CETL) aims to promote excellence in the teaching and learning of languages that do not have a large presence in UK Higher Education but which are of increasing strategic importance, locally and globally. A key objective of the CETL is to support blended language learning (i.e. using face-to-face and multimedia approaches).

We have recently introduced Flexi-Packs, an innovative package of M-learning materials, designed to establish stepping stones on the road to autonomy by:

  • facilitating access to self-study
  • maximising the use of university facilities
  • providing opportunities for collaborative learning
  • being user-friendly for both staff and students
  • being easy to modify and update

Each course unit comprises a series of taught sessions focusing on a variety of topics and language skills. The Flexi-Packs are designed to supplement those sessions by providing students with specially-tailored materials to support their learning. Each Turkish Flexi-Pack includes video clips and audio files, accompanied by a downloadable PDF which contains:

  • a range of learning activities (including the answers) covering the listening, reading and writing skills
  • a reference section with key vocabulary, grammar points and learning tips
  • links to websites and lists of additional materials of interest, including those available at our Language self-access rooms

Students will be able to use Flexi-Packs (PDFs, video clips and audio files) at the university, at home or “on the go”, using their own MP3 players. Flexi-Packs can easily be integrated into the existing Virtual Learning Environments.
