Every disaster is an unknown quantity which immediately reposes the oldest philosophical question – what does it mean to be in the world? Logic dictates that a body is either there or not there, 100% there or 0% there. This way of thinking is adequate for most occasions. But when there is a disaster (such as a plane crash), the world is reduced to a zone of uncertainty and the search for survivors proceeds according to the theory of probability, which suggests that a body may be 50% there, or perhaps only 25% there. This the way that autonomous drones make decisions. How can we imagine what that might be like? Perhaps the military use of “dazzle camouflage” gives us a clue. Watch
