Myles Brown BSc Physics, 1999
ATM Systems Engineer
I decided to study physics at the University of Southampton because I really like physical science, and aspired to become a pilot.
I had a fantastic time, all the tutors and lecturers were very supportive and helpful. And the social life was amazing.
A supportive environment
I had a fantastic time, all the tutors and lecturers were very supportive and helpful. And the social life was amazing. I didn’t like school very much, even though I did reasonably well. I had a 2-year gap between school and university (something I do recommend) – but my time at Southampton and studying physics was fantastic.
From Motorola to Airways NZ
My first role after graduating was a Staging Engineer at Motorola. I was involved in the installation, configuration and shipping of mobile telecommunications infrastructure to Motorola's international customers. Now, I work for Airways NZ as an ATM Systems Engineer. I develop and design systems for use in the domestic air traffic management business in New Zealand.
Choose a degree you will enjoy
My advice to prospective students is to choose a degree that you think you will enjoy, and that will secure you employment in the industry you want to work in. Don’t chose a degree to get a particular job, this is far too specific and will often close doors that later in life you wish you had left open.
