Paul Welsh BSc Physics and Mathematics, 1963
Intelligent Transportation Systems
I would recommend studying at the University of Southampton. The choice of subjects is wide, and it’s a great part of the country for getting involved with other activities. Many of the tutors are involved in research with a global impact, which keeps them on the leading edge.

An exciting career in research
My first job after graduating was in photocopying development. I was responsible for the development lab, where I built on my understanding of materials, manufacturing and development.
Throughout my career, I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in leading-edge Research and Development for over 45 years as a professional engineer, working with some of the finest minds in Europe, including Professor Mike McDonald – now retired from Southampton University.
Before retiring, I was a specialist in Intelligent Transportation Systems. I was responsible for user needs analysis, system architectures, requirement specification, implementation and operation.
Students should make the most of all opportunities
My advice to students is to be whole person at University. Don’t just study there – there will never be better opportunities to try new things. By the time you graduate, you should know how to learn, and your education will hopefully continue for the rest of your life.
