One of the principal aims of A Curriculum for Excellence is that all young Scots should become responsible citizens with respect for others and a commitment to participate responsibly in political, economic, social and cultural life. What role can languages education play in helping young people to achieve these goals? The debate is likely to raise challenging issues concerning communication strategies and values for interaction with citizens in the global age, mobility and increasing linguistic diversity across Europe and beyond, and democratic debate and social inclusion in a multicultural society. There have been numerous expressions of interest in the Sustainability Network for the Humanities, but many have been unable to make the date of the proposed first meeting. In order to get the broadest range of input from disciplines across the humanities, we have decided to postpone the date of the first meeting until 6th June 2007 (venue in London to be confirmed). For further information contact Karina Croucher (Archaeology.HEAcademy@liverpool.ac.uk).
