Reshaping Languages in Higher Education Conference, Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton, 9-10 July 2014
EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT EXTENDED TO 31 May 2014

This is the seventh biennial conference on languages in higher education, organised by the LLAS Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS), the University Council of Modern Languages (UCML) and the Association of University Language Centres (AULC). It aims to bring together teachers and researchers from across languages and related disciplines.

The theme of the conference aims to encourage the language community to take a bold and radical approach to the provision of languages in Higher Education. They include:

  • engaging with policy in both national and institutional contexts
  • working together to present a clear and collective voice for languages
  • thinking of new approaches to creating degree pathways and curricula
  • supporting students with all levels of linguistic skill in adding value to their graduate profile

Plenary sessions include:

  • Jocelyn Wyburd – Chair of UCML
  • Jenney Jenkins – University of Southampton
  • Adam Walker and Ian Lyne – Arts and Humanities Research Council
  • Interpreting and Translating panel with Danielle D’hayer – London Met and Helen Campbell – European Commission

New open-access peer-reviewed international journal: Cogent Education
Cogent Education is the third in the series of new, fully peer-reviewed, open access, international scholarly journals launched by Cogent OA, an imprint of Taylor & Francis. Cogent Education has a mission to help researchers publish their work for a global audience and discover new and exciting connections. It is now open for submissions and to celebrate its launch the article publishing charges have been waived for a limited time. Read more...

BAAL / Cambridge University Press Applied Linguistics Seminar 2014 
This seminar aims to start a conversation among researchers, policy writers, practitioners and language users about using, researching and teaching right to left scripted languages. An important aim is to have a voice from learners at the event. The seminar will be an opportunity to explore areas of need for improving access to and quality of teaching and learning of right to left scripted languages. Read more...

IN FOCUS Teaching in higher education through the medium of English
9-13 June, 2014 - University of Southampton

This is a five-day course designed for academics in universities across the world whose first language is not English and who are delivering degree programmes and presenting research through the medium of English.

Key areas to be covered during the course are :

  • Using English in the lecture theatre and the seminar room
  • Supporting the language needs of your international students
  • Giving papers and presentations at conferences
  • Raising your profile through English
