1. Applied linguistics and the teaching of english and modern languages

2. One-day workshop - new technologies for teaching linguistics

Call for presentations
Tips and tricks for teaching linguistics with technology, 17 february 2005, CILT, london
The Subject Centre in conjunction with CILT, the National Centre for Languages, is hosting a free-of-charge one-day workshop to explore the ways in which new technologies can enhance the teaching of Linguistics.

This event is intended for tutors in Higher Education and speakers from the HE sector who may wish to present examples of good practice in the use of technology for teaching Linguistics are invited to submit presentations. The submission deadline is 23 December 2004. Please email your presentation to David E Newton at CILT : david.newton@cilt.org.uk or telephone on 020 7395 0841.

Participants will be invited to bring and present examples of materials and techniques they have developed but at this stage items for the main core programme are sought.

3. 700 reasons for studying languages report

All colleagues on the Subject Centre Mailing List will shortly receive a copy of the new report '700 Reasons for studying languages' which presents new research by the Subject Centre. The study has identified more than 700 reasons to study languages. This research will be particularly useful for marketing languages and should help educators to promote language study and design courses.

4. 'Shaping the academy'

The Higher Education Academy has just published its consultation paper 'Shaping the Academy' that sets out its priorities and programme of work up to 2010. The paper (www.heacademy.ac.uk/news/1849.htm) is available on the Academy website

5. Widening participation research review - call for resources and materials

The Higher Education Academy - in partnership with the University of York and Staffordshire University - is undertaking for HEFCE an independent review of the existing evidence on widening participation in HE.

The review is focusing in particular on the barriers to access and success for students from all under-represented groups. It is to take a broad perspective on this, and the team are interested in the experiences of people in the context of their early education and families and communities, as well as institutional practices and influences.

Under review are both published literature, and research which has not been published. This can include evaluation reports, annual reviews, conference papers, articles prior to publication etc, as well as more formal material, such as journal articles, papers, reports and books. 7. Social diversity and difference in higher education

6-Seminar Series
The Centre for Learning and Teaching of the University of Wolverhampton in collaboration with the universities of Birmingham and Keele, is holding a series of 6 seminars exploring social diversity and difference, and their impact on participation, learning and teaching in HE.

The six events take place between February 2005 and April 2006 at Wolverhampton and Keele Universities, and will focus on how different sets of values and assumptions can influence approaches to teaching and learning in pre- and post-1992 universities.

8. PSIT 1st Scottish national (2nd national UK) conference

Public service interpreting and translating

The purpose of this conference is to explore Best Practice for practitioners seeking to deliver social inclusion and equality of access across the divides between languages and cultures - including professional cultures.

9. Place and cultural translation conference - call for papers

Betwixt and Between - An interdisciplinary conference
8 - 10 April 2005 Queen's university, Belfast

10. BALEAP and SATEFL joint conference

New Approaches to Materials Development for Language Learning
15 - 17 April 2005, James Watt Conference Centre, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh
There will be 4 keynote speakers at this conference who will cover the topic from very different perspectives. As well as a full programme of presentations it is hoped that there will be a wide variety of poster displays. Delegates are therefore encouraged to consider presenting their innovative classroom materials in this way.  The deadl;ine for papers is 07 January 2005 and for posters is 25 March 2005. 12. UCALL conference - Call for papers

Developing a pedagogy for CALL : examples of theory and practice
