Subject Centre Events

1. Applied linguistics and the teaching of English and Modern Languages

19 January 2005 Abden House, University of Edinburgh
The Subject Centre, in conjunction with The University of Edinburgh and Scottish CILT, is hosting a one-day seminar on Applied Linguistics and the teaching of English and Modern Languages. There are still some places available and details of the event together with an application form are now available on the Subject Centre website. PLEASE NOTE: The deadline for applications has been extended.

2. The future of phonetics

25 February 2004, CILT, London
A one-day workshop exploring the issues and problems we face in training the phoneticians of the future. How can we continue to maintain standards and traditions against a shrinking resource base (funding, staffing and time)? How can we attract people into a subject which is perceived as difficult and even to be avoided by many younger students? This workshop will explore these issues, offer suggestions and, most importantly, listen to your experiences and ideas. 3. New technologies for teaching linguistics

17 February 2005, CILT, London
Tips and tricks for teaching Linguistics with technology. A free event for tutors in Higher Education. This event will present examples of some of the ways in which new technologies can enhance the teaching of linguistics. There are still some places left. 4. Teaching globalisation: developing interdisciplinary pedagogies for a changing world - call for papers

18 April 2005, CILT, London
This conference aims to address pedagogic issues surrounding the study of global and local issues. How are these issues addressed in different disciplines? How can practitioners draw on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives to enhance student understandings of globalisation? 5. Call for articles

The Subject Centre wishes to expand its much-praised online collection of articles and case studies on aspects of the teaching and learning of Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies in Higher Education. Proposals are invited for either an article or a case study relating to a variety of areas. More detailed information can be found at the Subject Centre website.

6. Networking day for departmental administrators

8 February 2005, University of Leeds
This Networking Day for Departmental Administrators is being organised by the Higher Education Academy Subject Centres for Philosophical and Religious Studies (PRS), Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS) and History, Classics and Archaeology (HCA). No charge is being made and lunch will be provided. You are, however, asked to submit an online registration form (www.prs-ltsn.ac.uk/generic/admin_event_reg.html) is you wish to attend.

7. Guest speaker fund

"Implementing an independent language learning policy for university language students"

The following event is the recipient of an award from the Subject Centre's Guest Speaker Fund. Higher education academy

9. Research projects: Call for expressions of interest

The Higher Education Academy wishes to support evidence-based approaches to policy and practice and to pursue a scholarly, research-driven agenda to improve the quality of the student experience. One objective within this general aim is to promote and set up research programmes on key themes. The Academy Research Projects scheme constitutes one activity to meet this objective.
Projects must address one (or more) of 13 themes considered by the Academy as being of particular relevance to its aims. The duration of projects will normally be one year. The indicative level of funding is 25,000, although in exceptional circumstances a larger grant may be made available, up to an absolute maximum of 50,000.

16. Help for student researching in applied linguistics

Interactive White Boards and CPS
The Subject Centre has been approached by a research student on an MA course in Applied Linguistics who will be researching the use of 'mind tools', in particular Interactive White Boards and CPS within an ESOL setting. The students needs help in locating an FE setting that uses these tools regularly and will not mind being used as the study institution. If anyone can offer advice, please contact the Subject Centre: llas@soton.ac.uk and we will pass your message on to the student.

17. TransLang project - materials available

The Subject Centre has received a number of complete sets of documentation and resources for the TransLang PROJECT (Transferable Skills Development for Non-specialist Languages 1997-2000). The document includes tutor guides and materials. If you would like to receive a free copy of these please email the Subject Centre : llas@soton.ac.uk
