1. Making sense of copyright - now full

2. New methods in literary linguistics and their relevance for linguistics and literature students

26 November 2004, School of African and Oriental studies, University of London
Please note: There has been a CHANGE OF VENUE for this event. It will now be held in the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, University of London.
A location map (www.soas.ac.uk/gallery/findus.html) can be viewed. This event will consist of four sessions that will give a short account of the intellectual base for the field together with practical sessions on applications of linguistic techniques to literary studies. 3. Disciplinary identity of area studies

29 November 2004, CILT, London
This conference aims to discuss the nature of Area Studies and its value to its composite disciplines, its contribution to teaching and research and most importantly whether Area Studies itself is, or can become, a discipline. 4. Applied linguistics and the teaching of English and Modern Languages

19 January 2005, Abden House, University of Edinburgh campus
The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, in conjunction with The University of Edinburgh and Scottish CILT, is hosting a one-day Seminar on Applied Linguistics and the Teaching of English and Modern Languages on 19 January 2005 at Abden House on Edinburgh University campus. This seminar will explore ways in which the two distinct target audiences for the work produced by applied linguists in the area of language teaching and learning, namely people in ELT and in Modern Languages, can overlap increasingly so that shared problems can be addressed jointly and shared solutions developed. Subject Centre call for bids

5. Materials development projects

The Subject Centre is seeking to expand and develop its Materials Bank resource.
We are inviting bids for small-scale projects (max £5000 per project) which will develop new materials that can be made available for sharing across the sector. Further details and an application form can be found at the Subject Centre website. The closing date for applications is 30th November 2004 and projects will begin in January 2005.

9. Travel burseries

The Subject Centre has set aside funding to award travel bursaries to those attending its workshops and conferences. Two bursaries of up to £50 will be available for each workshop. special consideration will be given to applications from part-time, hourly paid and new staff. Successful applicants will be asked to write a brief report (up to 500 words) on the workshop they have attended. An application form will be available on our website by 10 November. The National Disability Team (NDT) conference aims to bring together key staff from across the higher education sector to discuss and debate future approaches to institution wide provision for disabled students.

12. Language world conference & exhibition 2005

1-3 July 2005, The University of Kent at Canterbury. Call for contributions: 15 November 2004

The theme of this conference is "creating opportunities" and contributions appropriate to this overall theme are welcomed. To contribute a session at Language World please provide a title and 80-word description, which will serve as your session abstract if accepted into the conference programme, by 15 November 2004. 13. European business school London - Conference

Exploratory practice: a principled framework or practitioner research on language teaching and learning
25 May 2005 at the European Business School - London (2pm - 5.30pm)
This half-day conference will offer participants an opportunity to find out more about the new and accessible approach to research on language teaching and learning 'Exploratory Practice'. There will be a charge of £25 for attendance and numbers will be limited. 14. The assessment of discussions/seminars in HE

Research is being undertaken at Bishop Grosseteste College, Lincoln into assessed discussions/seminars in HE. The researcher wishes to compare and contrast the approaches taken by different disciplines/departments in order to evaluate contemporary practice. 15. Courses for supporting visually impaired/blind students

One-day course for HE staff on 06 December 2004 at RNIB, London
Another of these popular courses is being offered for staff who need an overview of best practice methodology, and access technology, for supporting blind and visually impaired students. Presented by the National Centre for Tactile Diagrams and the Royal National Institute of the Blind. 16. Oxford University language centre conference

23 June 2005 'Le francais parlé au XXIe siècle - normes et variations'
La maison française d'Oxford, Oxford
This conference will be held at the Maison Française d'Oxford. Researchers are invited to submit papers with the suggested field. A detailed presentation of the conference and practical information can be found on the conference website (http://users.ox.ac.uk/~fp2005)

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 10 December 2004.
