2012

Dear colleague,

Welcome to the LLAS e-bulletin for February 2012. Click here to see this email on the LLAS website.

Message from the Director

I hope our partners and friends are negotiating the cold spell successfully, literally and figuratively. There has been disappointing news on applications to study languages at university, reinforcing the sense that we are going through some difficult times. But there have also been some very supportive responses in the press, including an encouraging piece from Sir Alan Langlands, CEO of HEFCE. The Welsh minister for education, Leighton Andrews, has also expressed his support for languages. The Routes into Languages community is organising an astonishing amount of activity which is having a noticeable impact on schools and generating support from the wider community, including businesses and football teams. And the languages umbrella association UCML is ramping up its lobbying activities. At LLAS we are more and more convinced that the key to the future of languages lies in collaboration, and we will continue to do all that we can through professional development and collaborative projects to help colleagues in the area of languages, linguistics and area studies to make a real difference in the years ahead.

REALIE Project

LLAS is working with colleagues in Modern Languages, University of Southampton who have been successful in their bid to the Higher Education Authority for a new project “Residence and Employment Abroad leading to International Employability”. The project is working with staff and students in Modern Languages to strengthen the employability dimension of work and study abroad experiences.  This includes a wider range of employment opportunities for students abroad, students sharing employability experiences with their peers and careers support for building a global graduate profile.  It will also be evaluating and extending partnerships with employers abroad as well as exploring employability support for students studying at HEIs abroad.

British Academy award for LLAS
John Canning, Senior Academic Coordinator in the Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, has been awarded funding from the British Academy to write an online statistics textbook for humanities students. This will provide a basic introduction to quantitative analysis using the kind of data most commonly used by humanities students.
